Straight bars ended Kendrick Lamar’s Cold War with Drake, not Instagram Live or tweets. Jay-Z added “the summer’s bout to get hot.”
Metro Boomin’s decade-long album debuts Future Kendrick intensifies Christmas Eve with a probable “Control” sequel on “Like That.” One of the most anticipated rap albums in years was We Don’t Trust You. Love is done, unlike the 2013 name-naming contest.
Kendrick says he’s “choosing violence” and an opponent must “prove that he’s a problem.” Although no titles are mentioned, Drake’s “First Person Shooter” and For All the Dogs seem related. Drake dances the “Beat It” with a sequined glove on “FPS” to boast about surpassing Michael Jackson in Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits. Kendrick concludes, “Prince outlived Mike Jack.” Sheesh.
After 10 years of stagnation, Drake and Kendrick struggled. Drake invited Kendrick Lamar on the Club Paradise tour with J. Cole, A$AP Rocky, Meek Mill, 2 Chainz, Waka Flocka Flame, and others after included him on Take Care in 2011. In a meeting on “Buried Alive,” Kendrick vented about Drake’s success when receiving game.
Three 6 Mafia, which rules, influences a Future song a decade later, causing anger. Hidden references may have been warning shots throughout the decade, but neither artist took them seriously. An angry comment about rappers using ghostwriters months before the incident. A charged “I put him on MY tour” reminder. “The Language,” “Element,” “Deep Water,” and “100” maybe were canonized but never were. Drake said he couldn’t be “one of those guys” who releases albums every three to five years when unveiling For All the Dogs. Kendrick and Baby Keem’s “The Hillbillies” flows like Drake’s “Sticky”. One rapper took it there during an ESPN SportsNation interview, but his organization buried it, according to NFL legend Marcellus Wiley.

USA-USSR rappers were close friends with Germany (J. Cole). Kendrick’s hook on Cole’s “Under the Sun” and their Black Friday beat swap and freestyle have kept them in touch on wax, but they haven’t released a rap forum collaboration album (we’ll always have this Cole and Drake have always been open about their relationship outside of rap, but this year they collaborated on two songs (their first in 10 years) and Cole accompanied Drake’s statewide tour for numerous performances.
Drake told Wilson and Brian “B.Dot” Miller that he, Kendrick, and Cole will choose a durable player next decade. A 2021 freestyle over Drake’s then-new song “Pipe Down,” Cole rapped, “Some people say I’m running third, they threw the bronze at me/Behind Drake and Dot, sure, these n-ggas is superstars to Drake’s “First Person Shooter” harder verse: “Love when they argue the hardest MC.”Is KDot? Is Aubrey? We formed a Big Three/me league?
On “Like That,” Kendrick says, “Motherfuck the Big Three, it’s just Big Me.” This song may attack J. Cole and Drake for rejecting “n-ggas cliquin up” early on. Cole also says he’s trying to prove he’s the finest as he prepares his long-awaited Black record-esque album The Fall Off to end any disagreements. Cole’s Big Three line on “First Person Shooter” finishes with him declaring himself Muhammed Ali, a statement he’s reiterated in great lines for years. He informed Lil Yachty he accepted popular opinion, not the bronze medal. Cole may preach rivalry with new Kendrick lines.
Future, the fourth face on 2010’s Rap Mount Rushmore, and Metro Boomin, his superproducer, have been neglected for hundreds of pages. Kendrick may have targeted Drake with a Future and Metro album due to Metro’s troubles. A mention about Heroes and Villains losing awards to Drake (and Metro partner 21 Savage)’s Her Loss was removed late last year. “You guys make me sick to my stomach, fam,” Drake said in a livestream about “the non-believers, the underachievers, the tweet-and-deleters.” After some subtle tweets and IG posts, Metro said the issue was “not deep at all”.

Metro’s Instagram unfollowing Drake before the album’s release informed hip-hop scholars that, as Kendrick would say, “it’s up.” Like Jay-Z and Drake with “Back to Back,” Kendrick and Metro assault their opponent with a banger in Metro’s new track “Like That,” which borrows Three 6 Mafia’s “Who the Crunkest” (which sampled 80s rap duo Rodney O and Joe Cooley), Eazy-E’s “Eazy Duz It,” and “Ridin Spinner
Future worked with Drake on 30 projects, including What a Time to Be Alive (2015) and two songs on his last solo album. Why employ Drake’s rival for his new project? They may have issues, but no one knows at press time. Despite early cooperation, their relationship is turbulent. In 2011, Future remixed Drake’s “Tony Montana,” however Future openly chastised Drake for not producing a video. Future toured with Drake in 2016, however he was apparently banned from his 2013 tour for criticizing Drake’s music.
Given the album’s name and Future’s opener about his number one fan despite dissing him, you don’t need a tinfoil hat to leap. Rap beef is geopolitics, not Future-Drake friendship. Drake would not ignore a frequent collaborator starting a project against him. Savage invites Pusha T to sing after joking that Pluto (Future) would do in a love scenario in the chorus of a recent hit.
