Carter VI has been teased by Wayne on previous occasions. In a July 2020 interview with Variety, the Young Money boss discussed the album, stating, “My favorite Carter album is the next one.” A month later, Wayne mentioned that the upcoming Carter album was “coming soon” in an interview with Michael Eaves of ESPN.

2018 saw the release of the eagerly awaited Tha Carter V, the most recent installment in the saga. At the beginning of 2020, he released his thirteenth studio album, Funeral, in response to its publication.
