In an apparent hoax, Drake, 50 Cent, The Game, Chris Brown, and Trey Songz registered to vote at the same Texas location, according to the Houston Chronicle.
The Harris County Tax Assessor’s Office is investigating because someone registered each of the five artists to vote on Aug. 15. The artists did not vote in the last election, hence voting fraud did not occur.
The Chronicle interviewed locals at the location, which is linked to a Katy, Texas, property. The five artists were never seen in the region, according to those questioned for the paper.
The property manager said the five artists have no connection to the house, which is regularly rented.
The Harris County Attorney’s Office notified KTRK that the perpetrator “committed a crime,” as state law punishes fake registration forms.
“Drake and 50 Cent obviously did not do these voter registrations and whoever did committed a crime,” a tweet said. “Our communities take the right to vote seriously and it shouldn’t be the subject of a prank.”
In his Houston Chronicle response, University of Texas law professor Randall Erben repeated the Attorney’s Office’s remarks.
“These people are either committing high misdemeanours or felonies,” Erben said. “This is no joke.”
The Texas Penal Code classifies lying on an application as a Class A misdemeanour punishable by one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
