Before Drake and Nicki Minaj’s separate albums were released, fans couldn’t help but wonder if the two Young Money superstars would work together again after a long breakup. While announcing that he would make an appearance on Pink Friday 2, Nicki herself had doubts in September about whether she would appear on For All The Dogs. Nicki did not make an appearance on For All The Dogs, even though he did accompany her on the PF2 song “Needle.”
Nicki revealed a new twist to the story in her recent interview with Ebro Darden: “Needle” was originally supposed to be on Drake’s album. “He told the fans on his tour that I was gonna be on his album, and actually the song he was talking about was ‘Needle,’” Nicki revealed in response to the dissatisfaction shown by fans over the duo’s decision to just release one new collaboration. However, he ultimately decided that acoustically, it didn’t fit for For All The Dogs, while I thought it fit Pink Friday 2 right away.
She claims that she had made jokes with a few of her friends about how she would eventually be able to keep the music for herself, and it turned out that she was correct. She acknowledged the sadness of the audience and remarked, “It was just God’s timing,” attributing the change to the lack of announcement from either artist. Positively, though, as she notes, “It’s the ideal Drake and Nicki song!” The entire interview between Nicki and Ebro is available below:
