Given the impending arrival of Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s first child, one might assume that the couple would be unwinding and relishing in the joy of greeting their bundle of splendor. However, Riri and A$AP are unlike the majority of other romantic partnerships. (For instance, Rihanna solidified her position as the reigning monarch of the Met Gala on Monday by being immortalized in a virtual statue—despite her inability to physically attend the event herself.)
A$AP unveiled his most recent single, “D.M.B.” (an abbreviation for “dat’s mah bish,” in case you were unaware), earlier today. The accompanying vibrant and colorful video pays homage to the couple’s passionate relationship and shared enthusiasm for social gatherings. However, while viewing, our most inquisitive thought was whether or not A$AP had just proposed to Rihanna with a grill set. Riri exits the venue at approximately 2:50 in a gauzy red veil (she would never wear something as mundane as white on her wedding day, after all), quickly retracting it to expose A$AP bared-toothed and gilded “marry me.” Was Rihanna’s reply? She wore diamond-encrusted earrings that read “I do.” Much to contemplate.
Putting aside that inquisitive matter, the self-directed visual by A$AP contained an abundance of additional aesthetic pleasures. The video is situated in the Bronx and, judging by paparazzi photos from the time and Rihanna’s lack of a baby bump, can be attributed to last summer. Fire hydrant-soaked block parties, a gathering at a Black hair salon, the rapper holding court in a pair of dazzling gold sequined pants, and the couple lounging on a classic New York exterior fire escape while donning vibrantly colored furs designed by Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton are all featured in the video.
Rihanna, however, is the true star of the show; her appearance is impeccable, as one would anticipate from arguably the most fashionable woman in the world. (Or, in the words of A$AP, a fashion killa.) She concludes the event by donning a remarkable ensemble consisting of a silk durag, a leather bustier, and matching trousers, complemented by a brown leather coat with a shearling lining that skims the ankle. Regardless of whether the video serves as a preview of their forthcoming wedding or not, we can all concur that the couple more than exhibited elegance. What’s up? To deliver the infant.
