Snoop Dogg is celebrating this year, which marks 30 years since the publication of his debut album and 50 years since the invention of hip-hop. Snoop and Dr. Dre are set to release a follow-up album called Missionary for Doggystyle, which is fittingly (or not, depending on who you ask) named Missionary.

Audible is also celebrating 50 years of hip-hop with original content, as Billboard reported in April.

 

 

Carl Lamarre of Billboard said on April 21 that “Snoop’s Words + Music: From the Streets to the Suites will debut June 15 and honor the 30th anniversary of Doggystyle.” Snoop will be meditating “on his coming-of-age journey from the streets of Long Beach to around the world and his decision to pursue love and life over death and destruction,” according to a news statement about From the Streets. It also talks about how he went from being a young kid vocalist in the church choir to meeting Dr. Dre and ultimately purchasing Death Row Records.

HipHopDX released an advanced clip from the Audible Original on Sunday, June 11. In it, Snoop expressly remembers that “Gin and Juice” was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1994.

 

“I believe Queen Latifah contacted me regarding the song? Because she won the Grammy for the song “Against U.N.I.T.Y.”, which me and her were nominated for. In the video, Snoop stated, “And I was hurt.” “However, she quickly made me feel better when she said, ‘N****, I love ‘Gin And Juice.’ That’s my favorite sh*t.”

 

“You know, when a muthaf*cka loses and sh*ts, it hurts him, but I’m like, ‘damn, this is the Queen, n****,” he went on. Put down your weapons. She told me this is the muthaf*ckin’ queen. “But I love ‘Gin and Juice.’ That’s my favorite sh*t,” she remarked. I thought, “You know what?” I’m able to accept that loss.

In the Best Rap Solo Performance category, Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.” defeated Snoop’s “Gin and Juice.”

 

Throughout his illustrious career, Snoop Dogg has received 16 Grammy nominations; nevertheless, he has yet to secure his first victory.
